I keep insisting on giving them their change, but they say no and walk away with a smile. It's always small change, of course, but over the day, it builds up.

Put the extra change in a small container. At the end of the day, if your balance is LOW, make it up with the change. Keep the remainder as a tip.

Have a small cup or tray on the counter. What change they don't want, put it in there for the next person.

Whatever is left at the end of the day, your employer will know what's going on with it.

You wont get in trouble if your register is over, only under!!! Maybe you should make yourself a little tip jar so when people overpay you can put the difference in there and not have to worry about it.
