Length x Width to find the area of the rectangle.

660 yd. x 110 yd. = 72,600 sq. yd. (area)

Then convert the area from square yards to acres.

1 acre= 4,840 sq. yd.
15 acres=72,600 sq. yd.

To go from square yards to acres.

You could think of the above as 4,840 sq. yd. divided by 4,840 sq. yd. = 1 acre.

So, 72,600 sq. yd. divided by 4,840 sq. yd. = 15 acres.

The sq. yd. cancel each other out.

You were on the right track! Good job!

No, you got it backwards. There is a simple way to do conversions such that you will never screw up if you set it up right:

yards * acres
_____________= acres
yards

Using the cross multiply technique, yards cancel out so you are left with acres. Hence, multiply by the number of acres per unit of yards to get the answer in acres.

that sounds kind of right,

you multiply the dimensions of the rectangle to give you the area in square yards. Then you need to find out how many square yards make up an acre.

Do 72600 / (number of square yards in an acre)

I don't know offhand how many yards per acre, but here's one approach.

There are 640 acres in a square mile.

A mile is 5,280 ft in length, so there 27,878,400 sq-ft in a sq-mile.

Divide that by 640 acres, and I get 43,450 sq-ft in one acre. Since a yard is 9 square ft, there are 4,840 sq yards per acre.

Take 72,600 yards in your shopping center and divide by 4,840 yds/acre and you get ...

15 acres.

There are 4840 square yards in an acre. Therefore there are: 72600 / 4840 = 15 acres in the shopping centre.
