If your tyre is almost lost the tread I wouldn't go for any hard rides as the grip in the tyre has gone and if you roll on the throttle too hard you may not want to know the outcome!
If you are just cruising you will be fine but the law will stop you if they see the tyre in dis-repair.
I would spend the money on two hoops of the same make as this not only gives you better steering but even grip handling and stability!
If you own a sportsbike don't skimp on sport touring tyres for GSXR 1000 or R1 as you may end up spending more for repairs than what you thought you might save on tyre life!
Burn them up and be proud of it!
I went through the stock dunlop 204's that come standard on my ZX10R in about 1900 miles! The bike rocks!
Good luck!

Probably not pulled over, but more possibly thrown down. Be very careful in what conditions you ride. Stay home if the roads are wet.
If you are on a sport bike, sport touring tires are a great option. The variable density, dual compound tires out there today have excellent grip and wear. My favorites are Avon, Continental, and Metzler. You'll get twice the life out of them as a full out sport tire, and 99% of the grip.

I was pulled over. Burbank California. I think I rode it bald for about a year, before getting pulled over though.

Shallow tread is not likely to be spotted while you're rolling.
As long as the caseing is good, traction should not be compromised on dry roads, but may be seriously degraded on wet ones.

It is more likely that you will get a flat tire or skid on a wet road....it would depend on how many cops cross your path and how observant they are.

The cop would have to have pretty good vision to notice your tire tread depth.

I doubt the cops would notice but if you crash with a knackered tyre, dont expect your insurance company to rush to compensate you because they most certainly will notice!! get the tyre first!!!!!
