Yes, but I actually read the tags.

The ones I ripped off said "not to be removed EXCEPT by the consumer". Since I was the consumer, not the store, it was legal.

If you buy a mattress it's perfectly legal for you to rip that tag off. It's only illegal for the store that you bought it from to rip it off.

only the end consumer may remove them if you buy the mattress then take the tags off you are not breaking any laws

Those tags get ripped off before I even get them home. I also crack the spines of every paperback book I own, ignore "Do Not Trespass" signs, speed wantonly and lie about my age. : )
