For all that it is maligned, colonialism has brought civilization to many places that were previously uncivilized.

Generally colonialism has brought better medicine, education, infrastructure and social systems to areas colonized.

The disadvantage of colonialism is that it must almost by definition be authoritarian. Once a native population has reached a certain degree of sophistication it will usually demand independence.

It's an advantage to the colonizing country, because you can exploit the colony. You can use the people as slave labor, or low-paid labor; take out their natural resources; and make their economy dependent on yours.
