I'm in the market for a new bellybar. I've been told 14ct gold is the best, or if I can find anything higher than that (carot wise). I've seen some 14ct gold jewellery that I'm quite happy with, but just saw some jewellery that was 18ct gold plated. Would this be any better for my skin than the 14ct solid gold?

Also, are there any other metals that would be better than gold?

I like sterling silver personally. Anything that is "plated" will eventually wear off or tarnish, stay away from that. It might also irritate your skin. If you're going with gold, consider 10ct. because it's not as soft as 14ct and it's harder to bend. It would be a good choice for your belly button.

RE: Gold plated vs. solid gold - at home test? Is there a way, without going to a jeweler, that I can determine whether a piece of jewelry I was given is gold plated or solid gold?

umm? gold has no properties that hurt your skin at all 14 k gold is pure gold 18k plated gold is useless a ring gold plated is probaly worth 10 dollars for the gold plating a solid gold is worth 5-6 times that easily depending on the amount of gold also it usually stops at 18k solid gold but ive seen 20k which is very soft and if your not careful you can dent it.
