Sometimes people who are close to us realize that we do or should know the answer to certain questions and will tell us so to get us to think for ourselves rather than always getting answers from someone else. However, don't stop asking if you are seeking information. Sometimes a question may have more than one correct answer and by getting info from various sources you can evaluate them all and decide which answer best fits your situation. That's what's good about a forum like YA. Or after thinking about it, you may decide something else altogether. The important thing is that you do THINK. If your friends and relatives hurt your feelings in the way they say this to you, just tell them "Yes, I know, but I just wanted to know what you thought also. If you have no independent thoughts on the matter just say so."

Sometimes people ask obvious questions out of habit - my dad always asks my mum where stuff is, even though he knows the answer 80% of the time. This is a bad habit I picked up, which my partner is currently trying to beat out of me by not telling me where stuff is, hence making me work it out myself.
So there are people who ask questions when they already know the answer, who wouldn't ask if they were encouraged to think a bit more. Then there are people who genuinely don't know an answer and need enlightening. Finally, there are people who know what the answer is, and ask the question anyway so they can then answer it when no-one else can, thus proving how brilliant they are.
If you're being a bit lazy or have developed a habit of asking before thinking, then it would be useful if you did a bit more work. If you genuinely don't know an answer, then it would be useful for your friends and family to stop being sarcastic and help you out. There's nothing wrong with asking when you don't know, and I encourage you to continue. It's a much better strategy than sitting there in silence and then claiming 5 days into a course or a year into class that you don't understand what's going on.

That's like saying it was a stupid question - there is no stupid or unnecessary question, if they are asked sincerely and truly wanting an answer.
The person who said that assumed, and assuming, well, you know what they say about that.
How would someone not raised the same, of the same religion, same background, etc know things about us if they didn't ask questions???
Keep asking your qiestions, and ignore those who assume, egocentrically, that everyone should just know everything that they know.
Smart people realize that with as much as they know, they hardly know anything.

That is s the character of a man. To ask question although he know the correct answer. They just want to ask unnecessary question for the sake of their self satisfaction of what he already know.
It could easily detect if a man is truly asking question which he do not know if you know psychology.

You will find people here on Yahoo Answers who say the same thing. They are all jerks. I think people say that when they don't know the answer but won't admit it. Keep asking, there are some smart people out there.

Really, how else are you expected to learn? Always ask questions about stuff you don't understand, or look it up on internet, or ask here.
