First Call a Clown and tell him to bring several ballons.
Second when he arrives tell him instead of getting the same old ballon dog you want a boat
Third test your boat and go down the rapids!

Very, Very Carefully!
When I was a lot younger (I was maybe 10 or 11, so about 11 years ago, wow that's half of my life, guh!) we used to go swimming in this river in Texas. The River had rapids (just small ones) and we'd lay down on our backs and just ride them (it didn't work so well). Eventually, our parents gave us inner tubes (that was always fun). I don't know why this question reminded me of that...but thanks for the good memories!

I would swim to the side and if I couldn't do that I would float on my back with my feet forward and down and my hands over my chest.
