I'm a 31 year old male and I've been interested in acting for many, many years. I've been on stage twice in my life in early school plays, so I'm a complete beginner, and I know nothing about how to get started. To make things more complex, I live in St Louis, Missouri, not exactly actors meca. If it's not too late for me to see if I'd want to pursue this on some level, how would I even get started? Any suggestions??? One thing I do have going for me is the fact that I look like I'm 19 or 20, I'm constantly carded at clubs and casinos, so hopefully that may help me out. Where would I go from here?

Hi,

it's never too late! I didn't start doing any acting seriously until I was 42! The other great thing about being an actor is that there are acting jobs for all ages!

I would say that if you really want to get serious that you might want to consider relocating to New York or LA or to someplace where there is a lot of theater, television or film work available.

Similar questions come up multiple times daily. If you do a search here on answers you will see other answers to this question. I answer a lot of questions about getting started in acting and so instead of writing the same or similar answers, I have created a 28-page ebooklet that answers pretty thoroughly your question.
Just go to http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/acs-blog.html , sign in on the right side of the page and you can download it for free. It's called: What It Takes To Become An Actor.

The second resource you might want to have a look at is this page: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/how_to_get_an_agent.html . It takes you through a process that I used to get two agents and a personal manager in a short period of time.

Hope this helps!

satrt by doing some acting classes. Once you've got the basic skills down pat - u can do a degree in something like applied theatre for about 3 yrs full time (i know three years is a lot, but if ur considering proffessionally u have all your life ahead of you, three years isn't really all that long). Then, (i'm not familliar with your area), but u could try for a specialised acting school, you usually need a degree under your belt before they consider u. However, it's not like school, becasue your constantly in small productions on stage in front of audiences.

Alternatively, if you don't want to do it proffessionally, there are some amature performance that go around. I'd suggest getting in contact with your nearest theatre company and discussing you options.

Hope I've helped

If you want to do this as a hobby then by all means do it. If you want to act professionally have your head examined. It's not what you think it is, believe me. I'm sure there are plenty of places you can go to do some acting where you live. Community colleges are an excellent and cheap place to start classes. Call every live theater you can find. I'm sure some of them offer classes and/or workshops or at least know of some. Word to the wise. Don't even consider trying to do anything at the pro level until you've studied for at least two years. And don't move to NY or LA until you're ready or nearly ready. The competition are the finest actors in the world. I say do it for fun for now decide later if you want to persue it as a career. Luck.

I am 47. I look about 34 and that's the age I tell people I am usually. Yes, they believe me and often people guess me at younger. Anyway, I'm right now in college getting a dual BA in theatre and creative writing. I graduate in 2 years and will be moving to LA to get my MFA in performance because I want to get into film. Are you too old? Heck no!!!! BTW, I've been told by my prof's that I have what it takes and I should go for it.
My suggestion is to go to school and get a degree. It's the way to get connections. I'm learning a LOT!!! And having a blast!! Education is wasted on the young!! LOL See ya in Cali!!

Call the Community Theater and the Professional Theater in your city and ask them to recommend an acting school or acting teacher.

i bet their are local theater companies where you are.
start by volunteering for ANYTHING. then try auditioning.

It isn't too late, but you should not just move to NY or LA and keep you fingers crossed.
