You may:
Vote and join a political party if you desire.
Enlist in the military but you have been able to do that for a year now.
Drink in Mississippi and I think Louisiana,
Smoke tobacco in many places.
You may now sign and be bound by contracts in your own name.
You are now subject to adult penalties in nearly all areas of criminal law (you were still under minor in a few before your birthday).
You are no longer subject to the will of your parents and they may not legally enforce decisions on you if you object.
You may travel freely without the requirement of a legal guardian across state lines or out of the country.
edit: Marriage has been an option for several years now depending on what sate your in. Same with employment and driving.

Well, let me start with the philosophical. You're eighteen now. You can't get away with the silly stuff you did as a "kid". My first suggestion would be to figure out what kind of person you want to be. Do you want to be someone of morals, value and integrity? Do you want to be the guy that someone else thinks of in a time of crisis, the person they can trust to have their back, help them out, be there for them? Think about these things.
After that, onto the pratical side. Register to vote. Make sure you have a checking account, and consider opening a SMALL credit card account to build some credit. You may have to start with a dept. store card. Keep the balance low, make reasonable payments. Charge $100, pay it off in three months. Do that several times, to establish credit.
If you are inclined to go to college, do it. Do it and stick with it. Don't even think about dropping out or "taking time off." I did that when I was twenty. I'm 32 now, and still have not finished, although I am blessed with a great job.
If you are thinking about the military, look at all your options. Talk to others who have made that decision. Otherwise, get a job. Start establishing a resume. When I was doing corporate hiring, I would rather hire someone who flipped burgers at McDonalds for a year, than someone who bounced from job to job, staying at each place for about two months.
Good luck, happy birthday, and welcome to the rest of your life. ;)

an 18 yr old can do pretty much everything a minor cant do, except drink and buy a handgun. at least in the US. but why do something just because its legal for you?? thats like saying im gonna start smoking just cause im old enough. u can do a lot of things now, buy property, get married, join the army, vote, anything almost! but do it cause you want to, not just cause you're old enough.

"What are the most important things an 18 year old person can do?"
Go to college. Get a degree. Those are the most important things an 18-year-old can do.

gather your 18 yr old friends and drink beer in your garage. let them sleep over your place so you and your friends will refrain from throwing bottles on other's mail box or howling on the streeets. the next day, do some cleaning in your place to give yourself a starting point of a guy-just-turned-18 becoming responsible. dont think of great things like donating your family's fortune to charity. do simple good deeds and impress yourself - NOT OTHERS.

you can move out of your parents, vote, not have a "cerfew"/stay out all night, get married, work as many hrs. as you wish,.....but the 1 thing you must avoid is "breaking the law"-it will lead to jail or prison.-as of 21, gamble, drink, you're 100% legal to do anything unless I'm forgeting something.

legally purchase protection against sexually transmitted diseases like condoms & birth control to help stop the spreading of A.I.D.S. go to a club & live life to the fullest. buy a lottery ticket for a chance to increase your wealth. vote for your country's policies. it's always important to have fun just be responsible because now you can't blame your parents for your mishaps.

First and foremost... you can VOTE!!!! You can also get married and join the military, though I advise against these two.
