if its a neck breaker then it is quick and painless but if it dosent catch the neck but instead gets the hand or leg then it is painfull and slow

Typically, possums are not a target for such traps. If the trap it large enough and strong enough I would surmise it would be effective, however I doubt painless nor quick as you would like to hear. It is similar to a bear or fox trap which causes great pain and lingering death to the trapped animal.

The design of the trap and the idea of breaking the neck would indicate that it was designed to make the death as humane and pain free as possible. If it were to, however, catch a different part of the body, it would remained trapped and dehydrate or starve to death.
