First I am a SERIOUS diesel nerd :). First off-as long as the air intake and exhaust are above the water line a diesel car will continue to run. on a gas car there more electrics so the stall level is much lower. Second a diesel will give you much greater mpg-but diesel is more expensive than regular gas. Another plus is most gas engines will give you 200-300k miles MAX before a rebuild is necessary. A diesel can give you up to 500k miles before a rebuild is necessay. Also oil changes for regular gas cars is every 3-5k miles on a diesel its every 8-10k (because they hold more oil). Now the one major fault when you do need a tuneup on a gas car $800 on a diesel $1500. Hope this helps-remeber to vote for a best answer

umm, it is going to depend on what gasoline/diesel car you are comparing. some of the older diesels are converted from gasoline and they are pretty worthless.

however, there are some really good cars designed to be diesels. a lot of them give more power and run for longer than comparable gasoline counterparts. if you just want a family car, there are much more in the US that are gasoline so there's selection.

for floods, assuming it's a fairly new car, i would get the diesel. they're usually tougher cars and the companies that make them nowadays all know what they're doing. if you want a brand, Land Rovers have the reputation for being great off roading. they're more expensive but you get what you pay for.

The guy who's on about diesel/petrol maintenance prices being majorly different seems to have had a very different experience to my own.

My little diesel Peugeot 205 has be far cheaper to run for the last twenty years than a petrol fiesta I happen to know of.

It depends on where you live and the number of miles that you drive. To justify the diesel you will have to put a bunch of miles on the car to make up for the increased maintenance expenses. Weigh out all your options and then you can make the proper decision for your application. good luck.
