Need help here. '96 passport with 97,000 miles. My running lights and my dashboard back light do not work. All other lights and electrical functions, interior and exterior, are fully operational. I checked all fuses in both fuse boxes- they are all fine. Anyone have any idea's other than a shop diagnosis at 150.00/hr with a 4 hr minimum or a 3rd fuse box I may be missing? The vehicle has no other electrical or engine problem.

looking at a schematic for commonalities between the two circuits it looks like you have one of three possible causes for the lack of dash lights and tail lamps. In the order of probability, your possible causes are:
1) a bad tail lamp relay. this relay is located inside the passenger compartment behind the left front kick panel. The kickpanel is the plastic panel to the left of your left foot when you are sitting in the driver's seat. If you take the plastic kick panel off you'll see three silver boxes about 1" square--those are relays. the middle one (from top to bottom) is the tail lamp relay. I can't tell if the relays are the same type but they look to be. I would suggest you switch the top two relays if the connectors are the same and see if you have the lights. If your lights start to work, then the relay is definetly bad. If they don't work, it may be because the relays are different and at at that time I'd recommend you buy a replacement relay as the relays are relatively inexpensive.

the second possibility is a bad ground for the parking lights. The ground is located on the inside of the left front fender (driver's side) at the back of the engine compartment. The ground is an eyelet terminal screwed into the inside of the fender. If the ground is loose, broken or corroded it could cause this problem. I would suggest checking this before buying a relay as this is an easy thing to check.

the third possibility is expensive...that is the headlamp combination switch that controls the lights. Fortunately, the other two items have a higher probability, but if the other two items don't fix the problem you'll probably have to pony up the bucks to have the diagnosis and repair done. However, I'd shop around before I'd pay $600 for someone to diagnosis it as this should not take anywhere near 4 hours to figure out!

hope that answers your question
