We have always just bought plants in the spring. We like the better boy vareity. There are also cherry tomatoes for salads. There are orange tomatoes you could use too. Good luck.

It depends on your purpose. If you want your tomatoes to have high production (i.e. fruit heavily with good quality), use hybrid. Ideally, however, it cannot be planted again. If you do otherwise, you can still get good fruits yes but you cannot get the same performance as your first planting that used the F1 seeds. So, you need to buy new seeds if you really want to get good performance of your tomatoes.

With the organic gardening now getter popular, it's better to use the open polinated varieties. There are some good OPV seeds available in the market with very good fruiting performance, resistant to pest and diseases, etc.

It a personal choice as one may not be actually better than the other, they each have their own unique characteristics. Most likely you will have to continue to buy the seed as they usually will not reproduce true.
