Wow such insightful and profound answers so far. I don't like Bush so it's all his fault, blah blah blah.

At least what President Bush is doing he believes he is doing for the good of this country. You may not like his policy, but it is policy he is trying to make for this country and not just himself. You want to blame this current administration for the lack of respect for this office even though the previous occupier thought so little of it that he used his power position and his respect for the office so much that he used it to have sex literally in his office with people half his age. Yeah yeah, its just sex right, doesnt demean the office of the presidency at all.

The reason people seem to have such little respect for the office of the presidency is because the left have made it perfectly acceptable and politically correct to bash this country at every turn. Oh the evil US is ruining the world with its imperialistic goals of taking over the world, lol. They forget the millions of people the US have helped to liberate over the years. They dont mention the billions of aid the country hands out. The left seems to forget the economic growth all over the world the US economy has helped to expand. No the US is just the devil that must be stopped and anything the left doesnt agree with the president is doing then they will bash the president and this country at every turn. The left doesnt like war so if we go to war then we are evil and so is the president. They cant seem to seperate policy issues with personal issues because its all personal. You disagree with an extreme liberal and you are a closeminded racist somehow.

As distasteful and disgusting I think President Clinton treated his office I always said I would shake his hand when he was president solely out of respect for the office of the presidency. I dont agree with everything, actually, a lot of what President Bush is doing, but I do agree with the US Constitution and what this country represents and stands for. For that reason alone I have tremendous respect for the office of the presidency. It is a very hard job and one I would never want to do. I dont think any president has ever wanted to undercut the success of this nation and just because I disagree with a presidents policy doesnt mean I dont respect the office.

Interesting observation... And kudos to you for actually posting a question on here that can lead to insightful, intelligent adult conversation. I had to mull that over a few times... But that sounds pretty logical. If you look at any voter "issue guides", the Democrats all have very similar views on everything. They may have different plans for accomplishing the missions, but they all agree on an end result. The Republicans are much more spread out on their views. Ron Paul (I know, not really a Republican, but he's still running on the Republican ticket) wants to see all troops home immediately. Huckabee supports environmental regulation. Nobody agrees on how to handle the immigration problem. I'm not sure the reason for this, but I see two possibilities: 1) We have the most unpopular president ever. The Republicans are trying to distance themselves from that and are trying to redefine/recreate/revive what the party stands for, or 2) Some politicians are beginning to understand that the American public is getting sick of every decision being a partisan issue, split exactly down party lines. They may be realizing that some decisions are human issues and American issues, not Republican or Democrat issues. I really don't know which one is more accurate, but I'd like to see this conversation continue!

I don't want to go back far enough for a first so I will say in the last 50 years we had a president order a burglary, a president pardon the guy who ordered the burglary, a president give away much of our possessions that we fought hard for (Panama Canal to name just one), a president involved with selling drugs to finance weapons given to an enemy, A president using his office to get oral sex form subordinates and then lying about it, and a president who can't form an intelligible sentence but who still managed to get us in a war over unconfirmed intelligence data and who created for us a international reputation as a state that condones kidnapping and torture.

What is there to respect? Well they do have nice suits but besides that I mean?

Added: To the posters above me, I didn't vote for him so I am not to blame for him being there and the man fills the office so if the man is not worthy of respect then the office suffers for it.

There is no excuse for not respecting the office of the Presidency. We don't have to like the man in that position but we voted them in .I am ashamed that so many Americans disrespect the Highest office instead of just the man.

I have respect for the Office of President, I always have and always will. That doesn't mean I should ignore an incompetent and arrogant President that has divided this country and been incompetent at waging war.

Jrd said it in a nutshell. You can oppose any political leader's opinions, his ideas, his party, his views...but the minute you step over that line and start the idiotic name-callings and put-downs, that's when you start disrespecting the person. We, as human beings, have respect at the very core of our nature. For some reason, parents are no longer teaching their children respect. That is why you're hearing all of the stupid Bush-bashing and name-callings of today.

Get a grip people and grow up. Oppose is one thing, disrespect is another.

Because Bush sullied the name of the Presidential Office. And the name of The United States Of America. After he leaves office, respect will gradually return to that office and to our great country.

Of which country are you speaking about? I assume the U.S., but I could be wrong -- other countries have Presidential offices, too. If you intend to speak about the U.S. Presidency, I would think that it is because our Presidents seem to not obey their oaths of office, they seem to flaunt their position, and abuse its power for their benefit or the benefit of their party, of their cronies, of their colleagues -- anything but their constituency. Look at Nixon and Watergate, Reagan and Iran-Contra, Clinton and Lewinsky, Bush Jr. and WMD/Iraq/domestic spying.
