place so much importance on tiny little cartoon avatars?

The avatars aren't what's important to me. I have met many nice and decent people on here and made friends wiith some of them and now talk on daily basis.

This avatar required very little thought on my part...I'm more concerned with giving good or interesting answers. I like to think that I succeed more often than I fail.

Most of us make an effort to get to know the person behind the avatar. We chat, exchange emails and messages, we share secrets and life experiences..
Real friendships have started here on P&S.
My advice to you is: stick on!

I think they get wrapped up in it and think of the avatar as themselves.
