looks like black gunk under the head and the oil filter?

sticky and slipy gunk and is it a problme?

clean the engine off with some engine bright or other parts cleaner. inject the oil system with dye. get the engine warmed up and check for leaks around the valve cover, oil filter gasket, and everywhere else. if you find nothing, try dye with other systems on the car (ie power steering, transmission, etc)

More info required what size engine how many miles and do you mean under the valve cover.

Sounds like sludge. Has the engine been serviced lately? It looks like it needs to be cleaned out. good luck.
