The California is nice and clean.

The pool is very small and located on the top of the hotel.

The employees are very nice.

You don't need to bring sheets. They have toothpaste etc in the gift shop on the second floor.>If you need bottled water, toothpaste, etc I would buy it at the ABC store or Walgreens, both are on Fremont.

The good - The California is connected directly to Main Street Station via an enclosed skybridge, so you have easy access to both. I prefer the casino and restaurants at Main Street. The way they have things sit up it's more like one big hotel than 2 separate. The Pullman Grille restaurant at Main Street is excellent, and their buffet for lunch and dinner are the best value buffets in LV.

The Market Street Cafe at California has some really good meal deals if you're a night owl or an early riser 11pm-7am -
2 pancakes & eggs - $2.95
8oz NY Steak dinner - $3.99 served 11pm-9am
Prime Rib dinner - $6.99 served 4pm-11pm

The only bad thing is the Cal is one block off of Fremont street. You don't have to walk outside though if it's hot, just cross the street, walk into the back of the Vegas Club hotel and you can walk through their casino all the way to Fremont St.

Since you're going to be downtown, you might as well take advantage of the FSE coupons - pick them up at the FSE office at 425 Fremont St - The office is on the second floor of the parking garage next to Walgreens. Show an out of state ID for the coupons.
$10 free play - Binions
$10 free play - Golden Nugget
2-4-1 buffet Main Street Station
2-4-1 buffet Fremont
2-4-1 buffet Fitzgeralds
2-4-1 entree Magnolia's - Four Queens

If you're a shrimp lover try the .99c shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate, this is one of my favorites.

its owned by Boyd gaming who own the Orleans, Sams Town, Gold Coast etc so you can be assured it is very clean. Being downtown the rooms will be very small and nowhere near 5 star quality (the only one approaching that is the Golden Nugget.

No there wont be any toothpaste or toothbrush in the room, there will be shower gel and shampoo but thats it. The best thing about the Cali is the $6.99 prime rib dinner downstairs in the cafe (best value in vegas imo)

There are close to 30 real reviews of the California here http://las-vegas-hotels.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g45963-d91763-Reviews-California_Hotel-Las_Vegas_Nevada.html

Dont expect 5 star because you wont get it, but expect a clean, comfortable enough room and smoky casino.

They have bedsheets and all the other things you mentioned. It's located in downtown Las Vegas and is a primary site for visitors from Hawaii. If you like steaks and chops, the Redwood Grill is tops!
