OK I'm a Yankee fan but i wont go saying "ha ha you guys suck, the yanks are coming". I'm a very avid follower of baseball, all teams.
Its pretty much like everybody else has been saying, there not getting it done like they were in the 1st half of the season. And not to sound like a ****, but the Red Sox have a tendency of blowing it in the 2nd half. I'm not saying they will, I'm just saying its happened many times before. And to the guy who said "look @ 2004", that's not something i would want to relive. The Red Sox had a 6 game lead in the division on the Yankees in late July and the yanks came back to win the division.
Basically their just not hitting, Manny and Papi have been quiet for the most part. Papi is hurt and it doesn't matter whats hes saying, i played w/ the same injury and it affects you greatly. JD was the worst signing they could of made. And no, Schilling wont make a difference. Hes old and has been inconsistent all year, if i were you i wouldn't be putting my faith in Schilling at the moment.
They need to just relax and not worry about the other teams behind them. Possibly move guys around in the line up and see if they can get something going. Other than that theres nothing else really to say. They re going through a slump that they hopefully, or in my case not hopefully break out of.

Take it from a fellow who has followed the Red Sox for almost forty years...stay calm. Like all teams, the Sox always have a bad stretch...and it is foolish to think they would maintain a double digit lead over the Yankees the entire season. I still think they have better pitching than the Yankees and Blue Jays, and if you look back at 2004, you'll see they fell into the same July pattern that year as well.
If you look at the recent success of wild card teams in winning the World Series during this century, you might not want the Sox to finish in first anyway.

I think it's possible that they have been playing over their heads most of the first part of the season. Could it be that they aren't as good as they led all of MLB to believe they were for most of the first half. Also, they have played most of the season with almost no significant injuries while other teams like the Yankees and Tigers have had numerous major injuries to deal with. Now that the Sox are getting banged up a bit (Schilling, Big Papi's knee, Drew being Drew) they are having to deal with adversity. I still think they will hold on, but with the lineup the Yankees can trot out there everyday, you never know.

The worst part of it is dealing with Yankee fans on a daily basis. All of a sudden the Yankees are 7 games back but their fans are acting like it's only a matter of time before the Red Sox are caught. I wish there were something that I could point to, but they are not getting clutch hits. Weak hitting teams like the Padres can win as long as they cluster their hits in one inning. The Red Sox can get 11 or 12 hits and scatter them over 9 anemic choking, non-clutch innings. And to a mediocre team like the Royals or the White Sox. Just painful.

1st. half - Sox look like the best team in the bigs. Yanks struggle.
2nd. half - Yanks make a surge, Red Sox choke.
It's been going on 4 quite some time now.

During a 162-game season, every team is going to hit a slump.
The Red Sox are still the class of their division, and it's still going to be a huge chore for the Yankees to catch them. It's not anything in particular doing them in, just the fact that they're not playing well overall. One night it's the pitching, the next the hitting.
They should be fine, barring some serious injuries. As a Jays fan, I'm still envious of you guys because you'll more than likely be watching your team in the playoffs.

The Red Sox are better than any team in that division but that doesn't mean their not overrated. I believe they are under .500 since June 1st and if it weren't for such a good start they'd be within 2 games of the Yankees. I expect them to win the division, but Papi and Manny really need to get it going or they could have trouble.

oh yankee fans get your mouth shut why cause you cant handle the pressure. When is the last time the redsox won the division. The wildcard was invented so the redsox could play in the postseason. otherwise th eredsox would never see postseason. every team goes in slumps. the redsox have been fortunate no serious injuries this year. not the case for the yankees. so it will be a race. oh and maybe its because boston pitching is starting to fail.

I bet that they know that a lot of teams are catching up to them...
Not just the Yankees, but the Blue Jays, the Indians, the White Sox ....
They just have to take a good deep breath and let it all out, it just tend to happen to be sloppy just after the allstar break but it will be ok for the organization and for the city...

Don't worry, they have a 7 game lead in the AL East, and I think they'll trade Ellsbury for Griffey Jr. Go Sox!
