Panneling is made to fit 4' and repeat the pattern over and over. figure out if you want the first pc to be 16", 32" or 48" and work from there so your breaks for the next pc is centered on the backing stud.

I'm pretty sure that even if the room is exactly square, you don't have the same wall space on all four walls (must be a door in there someplace). I look at each wall separately. I try to make the panels about the same size, but that is not that important: think about the relative space between styles and panels, styles are not very wide, therefore they need to be all the same size. the larger panels can very a little and you won't notice.
As far as the formula, by eye, choose a number of panels that you think would look good on the wall space you have. If you are going to use 4" styles say, add one to the number of panels and multiply by 4". That will give you the total amount taken up by your styles, subtract that number from the total length of the wall. Now you can divide the remainder by the number of panels and you will get the size of each.

Don't forget, that if you are doing the entire room, that you can't overlap the corners. Deduct the thickness of the panels on at least one side of each wall.

Both one and two, valid. First of all in some measure (no pun intended) Square doesn't strictly equate to size,,, which you didn't mention.

If one assumes paneling is 48 inches wide (best checked with a tape for fractional variances),,, but the room is 9.5 ft on each wall, then at a corner or somewhere, a cut would have to be made. Certainly we want to believe that even in a square room all walls are Precisiely equal, but being constructed by humans, and allowing for Universal/Cosmic issues, EXACT isn't always exactly the case.

Most paneling grooves are designed as such to be on a stud center at some point along the 4 ft. span.

Then the issue is probably best determined by YOU knowing where each stud is around the room, and deciding the "WHY" of ripping panels just for your described effect. Beyond that "some" paneling has random width grooving simply for a more natural look. An exception to that would be BeadBoard for one.

Finally there is the issue of the corners, and on at least two walls @ 9.5; the cut would have to be 1.5 plus/minus; the thickness of the paneling on the adjacent wall, to fit to the corner (if that's where you chose to install the patch.) Then there is most usually corner molding added to hide that. Some people install flat molding over each panel seam as well.

With all due respect, I think you're "over thinking" this issue.

DON`T USE PANELING THE RE-SALE VALUE SUCKS! WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE ALL PANELS ARE THE SAME SIZE? DO YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO CUT ALL OF YOUR PANELING PERFECT? GET REAL THROW THE PARTIAL BACK IN THE CORNER SO YOU DON`T SEE IT.
