It can also be traced back to religious roots. The U.S. is was founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs, and it is said in the New Testament that the Jews must build a temple in Israel for the second coming of Christ. Therefore, supporting Israel would be supporting the Judeo-Christian values of America.
Politically, Israel is sympathetic and cooperative with democratic beliefs. They are a small nation that are "bullied " by their Muslim neighbors, and the U.S., being a champion of democratic values, has historically defended the nation. The current prime minister, Ehud Olmert, is pro-American as were many former prime ministers - most likely because the small nation relies on America's large pool of military resources for protection from terrorists and Muslim neighbors.
So America's positive connection with Israel can be classified as political, religious, or business...Many Americans are Jewish and would naturally support the nation as well. I'm sure each American president could justify their support of Israel for different reasons.

None of our relationships with other countries is as simple as any normal relationship. There are multiple problems, multiple agreements, multiple disagreements, all at the same time.
Saddam was the best of some bad choices for a while. When he turned on the values he said he'd use, we dealt with him (we waited until he invaded Kuwait, paid suicide bombers to attack Israel, tried to assassinate one of our Presidents, etc., first).
One never knows. Look at Osama. NO ONE would disagree with helping him fight the USSR's occupation of that country so they could have a sea access to the Mediterranean. Who would have seen he'd turn? Even if there were clues, just give the are to the Russians?
That would have been silly.
No, our relationship with Israel is complex. There is no trust, no love. We even chased them off during the Suez Canal crisis (people forget that, and I know the rest of that story!)

Israel is the only Representative Democracy in the Middle East. We support them because the alternative in that area is radical Islam. If you consider what the Islamic countries have done over the years while they bicker and fight amongst themselves it's frightening. That's why the US supports them. To that end, the world needs Israel there to hold some sort of stability in the area. Beside we and they are based in Jewish and Christian beliefs in Jesus Christ and not in Mohammad

Um, it could be that 1) they support us just as much, and 2) they do all the dirty military work we would get harassed for. They take a lot of crap, and if they didn't do it we would have to, so I'd say they have our gratitude, I wouldn't say "unconditional love."

I wouldn't go that far. Israel is a special case, and should be. But the US has expressed displeasure with Israaeli policies a number of times and pressured them to change.

Not unconditional. Believe it or not, the US has NOT entered into a mutual defense treaty with Israel. We have no treaty or diplomatic obligation to protect them nor they us.
