I have a 98' grand Am with 167,000 miles on it.
When the ignition is turned to the start position. there is no sound, although alllights work and function nice and bright. turn the key off, then turn to the start position again, the engine hesitates and starts rather slowly. There is a hint of clicking before it starts. The car for a while now has been starting slowly, even with new batt and alternator. What could be the problem? Any suggestions are welcome. I believe that the battery and charging systems are ok.

Sounds like you either have high resistance in one of your battery cables(lots of corrosion) or a bad starter. You can have the starter checked at most better parts stores. the cables can be a little trickier to diagnose if the corrosion is inside the outer cover. You might have them looked at by a competent mechanic.

I've noticed that when my starters start to go bad it takes about 10 clicks of the key before it starts, and when the starter does start it ends up drawing much more energy such that unless the battery is 100% it will barely turn over. In addition to energy bad starters also take 40% more time to get the engine started, I have to have the key in the igntion position for several seconds. When I put a new starter in, BAM the engine just instantly zaps on.

Additionally, all new starters are rebuilt in China and so their quality is poor. You may have to replace them often.

Check the main cable going to the starter. Check for a loose connection and/or corrosion. Look closely at the cable, does it swell up at the end where it mounts to the starter? If it does, it is bad and needs to be replaced.

If all checks good there, start looking at the starter as the problem (Autozone can check them, just like they do for alternators).

You have a bad starting system not charging system. Check wiring to the srarter then if you find no probs pull the starter and have it tested. Good luck!

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NO DOING ANY GOOD.

You might have worn out your flywheel, or the starter is bad one or the other. or you could just have a bad connection w/ your starter.
