You put TOO much oil in or did'nt put enought in (there is an automatic shut -off that won't allow the mower to start if TOO much oil is added or not enought ). You'll have to remove / add some oil for the mower to start (provided that's the problem) . If not, drain the gas(I hope your bf didn't put bad gas with rust flakes floating in it,cause if he did that you've got to drain the gas and clean the float, which you won't be able to do if that type of gas was added so stupidly which would reflect on one's ability to preform mechanical repairs ! If bad gas was the problem then I'd say to start adding a df infront of bf (in case you can't figure it out df stands for "dumb f#@^* ". GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!

Depending on the type of mower that you bought, there are some different things that you have to do.
On some you have to manually set the choke and when the engine starts you have to open the choke.
Did you read the instructions that came with the mower?
Do you have it full of gas? Do you have to push a primer bulb before you start it?
If it is a 2 cycle mower motor, did you mix oil with the gas?
If it is a 4 cycle motor, is there oil in the crankcase?
If your BF can't help you, what about a neighbor or a relative to assist you getting it started. I am sure that the neighbor would like to see the grass cut as much as you.
If all this fails, take it back and either get another one or your money back. good luck.

You may have put old gas in it. Most gas lawn mowers now require you to hold down a bar at the end of the bars to start it, otherwise follow the instructions. If this doesn't work take it back to the store for another IE. store credit

Did you knock the spark plug wire loose? It could be that you bought a lemon and need to take it back to the store. Are you using the right gasolene? Is the oil level right? Is the air intake filter at the carburater clogged? Are you choking/ priming it at start?

Surely it is under warranty if you just purchased it. That's a no brainer. Bring it back.

Try cleaning out your carborator. That should be the reason that it is not staying on.
