If you have a hyphenated name can you just use one or must you use both? And which one is the true last name is it the first of the hyphenated name or the last hyphenated name? If you have a child do you put mom's first or dad's first?

My main concern too is that I don't want to use the biological father's last name just mine since he's not in the picture... my child's last name is his first and then mine

for those that seem concerned that I'm dishonoring my husband... this is not my husband's children it's just mine from a previous relationship that the father has never been in the picture.

I have a hyphenated name but never use the first part of it unless I have to (tax forms, etc). At work and in every day life, I just use the second half. My mom's name is first and my dad's is second (and the one I use daily).

I am a bit confused. But, If that dad isn't in the picture then use your last name. You don't want to bring her to school and her mom has another name.
My daughter has a daughter where the biological dad wasn't around. Rarely. So, the baby has her last name.
Now she is with her BF and their son has his dad's last name. There is another baby on the way and he or she will have the dad's last name sinse they have been a family for several years now. When they get married, they will change last names, my daughter and her first child's last name.
Her step father is a daddy. It is easy to plant sperm. but a real father is a daddy and makes his step daughter feel like she is the world to him.
About hyphenated names.......that trend pretty much died.
As a nurse it was so confusing. The lab would use one last name and the doctor the other. We got paper work confused and gosh if it happens at birth imagine the confusion through out life.
Use your name and if you are in a commited relationship, you can both change names if you get married. Infact you can legally change your name.

Of course, its all entirely up to you which way you want to put the name (mom's first or dad's first). I've seen it done both ways for different reasons. I hyphenated my name when I got married and I do sometimes get away with just using the first last name, but I think you will have to use both names as if they were one. I sometimes have to put them into one word or a space when some places computers don't recognize hyphens.

when it comes to baby you do whatever you want when you fill out the birthcertificate. If you have a hyphenated name you must remember to sign the full last name as it appears on your social security card/information.

The new hyphenated name, in its entirety, is the new true name (Ex James Smith-Brown). Traditionally, the mother's comes first (Sally Smith & Bob Brown), then the father's. (That's usually the way the woman does it (Sally Smith-Brown)when she marries, and if they choose to give the child a hypenated name also, it's usually the same way as hers.)

I can't imagine the disrespect you are showing your husband by not honoring him with a child who bares his name.
