Keep it in a warm room, shine a desk lamp on it (or use a reptile basking lamp, but only in really cold cases), buy a cheap heater. If the size of the heater is an issue because you have your betta in a small under 5 gallon tank, there are heaters like the Hydor Mini Heater (http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18534/si1382454/cl0/hydorminiheater75watt).

The best thing would be to get a heater suitable for your tank because it keeps it a constant temp. Using a light source would only work for the day because you don't want to be shining a light on the betta 24 hrs. They need rest too.

Whatever you decide to do, find an aquarium thermometer to monitor the temperature. It shouldn't dip more than 3 degrees celsius in a day.

IF you really want to keep your betta in ideal conditions, then get a 5 gallon tank, and a heater. They don't make heaters with thermostats for tanks any smaller than that, and without thermostats, the heater can easily overheat the water and kill the betta.

Bettas do NOT live well at room temp, despite what some will tell you. They need water at least 78 degrees for optimum health. Less and they are stressed and more likely to be disease prone.

A heater is the best, most reliable way to maintain a constant (read: SAFE) temp for your tank. Lights are not heaters and shouldn't be used as them. Certainly not 24/7! Good Grief!

All light and no sleep makes Jack a dull boy.

You can get a heater but if your tank is small like around 5 to 10 gallons you can get a pocket size heater which only cost around $5-15USD.

I have a light in the hood of mine, and it seems to keep the water warm enough for him. I leave it on 24/7.

As long as the temperature is around 81degrees, the ideal temperature, it is ok. But also keep in mind that the temp. will drop at night.
