I plan on buying a new phone with T-Mobile tomorrow, however I have some questions. I know they have that new law that you are now able to keep your cell number, so does that mean you have to pay off your bill with the other company before you are able to take your phone number or can I just go to the store and they switich it automatically. Also I am no longer under contract with Sprint (thank God) if that helps.

I work for T-Mobile and that's B.S... you can just switch anytime you want... even if you owe them a million dollars.

Switching carriers has nothing to do with how much you owe the old one... I can get into the system and transfer your number to T-Mobile now in a matter of 20 seconds...

It should be fully completed within 24 hours as it automatically cancels your old line with Sprint. =)

Any time you can go to any cellphone providers and start negotiating because your contract with Sprint is expire. Providers will do all transfer job.
Chose from company store or authorize dealers only. Last guy could offer a wide range of negotiations. Look at list three different stores.
Ask your friends and relatives about quality of signal of chosen providers in your home. It really hurts when the signal will lost in the middle of the conversation.

Your phone number must be available in order to switch it over. So the short answer is yes, the bill must be paid and the contract complete before your phone number will be released.

Once you are at the TMobile store, ask them to check to make sure your number is available, pretty simple really, if it is, they do all the work.
