Yes it is true. Everyone must do it. Go to your local post office and get it taken care of. Don't worry, this has been around for a long time. We currently have no draft, so no worries.

You register for selective service and you probably will not be thrown in jail. It's no big deal it takes a minute of your time and it commits you to nothing.

A man who fails to register may, if prosecuted and convicted, face a fine of up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five years.
STUDENT FINANCIAL AID
Men, born after December 31, 1959, who aren't registered with Selective Service won't qualify for Federal student loans or grant programs. This includes Pell Grants, College Work Study, Guaranteed Student/Plus Loans, and National Direct Student Loans.
CITIZENSHIP
The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) makes registration with Selective Service a condition for U.S. citizenship if the man first arrived in the U.S. before his 26th birthday.
FEDERAL JOB TRAINING
The Workforce Investment Act (formerly called the Job Training Partnership Act - JTPA) offers programs that can train young men for jobs in auto mechanics and other skills. This program is only open to those men who register with Selective Service. Only men born after December 31, 1959, are required to show proof of registration.
FEDERAL JOBS
A man must be registered to be eligible for jobs in the Executive Branch of the Federal government and the U.S. Postal Service. Proof of registration is required only for men born after December 31, 1959.
And then there are state penalties such as not being able to go to public colleges or universities, not being able to recieve state benefits such as state paid training or college funds, not be able to get a driver's license, not be able to get a business or professional license,

That only applies to males. Women are not required to sign up. You might not go to jail, but you will forfeit many rights by not signing up. Also, should the draft be re-instated, you likely would go to jail. Sign up and keep the proof they send. If they lose their records, then you can prove that you fulfilled your end of things when applying for loans or jobs.

Yes you do, it is still the law. Right now, congress has not authorized the use of the draft and we are fortunate to have an all volunteer military. That could change with an act of congress though, so the registration is still in place.
However, congress would be remiss if they reinstituted the draft.

Every 18-year-old has to register with them as soon as they turn. You don't have to register to vote, but that's another thing you can do once you turn 18.
