If you want a decent job, you need an MA in an English-related subject. Applied Linguistics/TESOL is probably the best degree to have in this field.

Let me add this, since others aren't chiming in here: You can get a TESL/TESOL certificate, but yes, it does cost money, and while it may help you when you reach the classroom, it isn't really crucial to get a job. The credentials you need vary according to the country, but most places require at least a BA to get any kind of work. Without the MA, you can find work in high schools, junior high schools, language schools, and company classes in many countries. These aren't usually great jobs, but if you just want to travel and see stuff, that might work.
