Should People Need A License to Own A Cat or Dog?
I've been thinking . . . run!

I keep hearing the same old things, day in day out: "We can't afford to get the cat fixed," . . . "We can't afford the vet bills," soooo . . . I think people should have to BUY a license to own a cat or dog. If they want a pet badly enough, they'll pay the fee!

AND . . .

They should have their licenses revoked if they fail to get the animal spayed/neutered, as well as vaccinated yearly. This would definitely help control the abandonned, abused, neglected & rejected pet population.

Just my bright idea for today. :)

What do you think?

PS- I'm talking about PETS not KIDS.

In many areas, they DO require that you buy a license to have a pet -- but lots of people ignore it. Do you really want to spend your tax dollars chasing after bad pet owners?

I do agree though, that it's a crying shame the way some people treat their pets -- like toys that have no feelings or needs and that only exist to cater to their owners.

On the bright side, I know a lot of loving pet owners who take good care of their pets. Some can afford to keep the kittens and puppies, or are responsible enough to find good homes for them. If they were all spayed and neutered, there wouldn't be any more puppies and kitties in the world, after all. I think good owners should be given a tax break (-:.

Its a good idea in theory...but the problem with this is only the responsible pet owners that already have vaccinated and neutered pets would be the only ones actually going out and getting the license...the same old irresponsible owners would just own pets illegally.

I think that's a really ignorant idea. It wouldn't help control anything, you'd than just have a bunch of people without a license who now wont want to take their animal to the vet because then they'd probably HAVE to get one to have their animals treated. License cost money, and i wouldn't be willing to pay for one.

There is no way to stop animal abuse, it's a persons will to do what they want. No matter how much we donate, no matter how many stupid rules and regulations someone comes up with, animals will continued to be mistreated.

If you stand for this, than i guess it would be just the same to make people obtain license for their children, huh? Will a license stop child abuse too?

No. Only the responsible people that are now presently taking care of their animals will follow the new licensing requirements. Therefore, they will face an undue burden because of others that are careless and irresponsible.
Then, without a large increase in our ability to monitor and track animals, these people will rarely face penalties for not following the new law. While I agree there are problems with how people treat and manage their animals, I believe the cure you have suggested would not make a large difference compared to the burden placed on the ones that are already responsble for treating their animals appropriately.

Honestly, the whole license thing for a pet, is a pretty bad idea. One, not everyone wants to go and get their pet spayed or neutered. Also, we switched vet offices because they wanted us to pay about $400.00 for getting our puppy fixed, who at the time weighed 9lbs and was about 5-6 months. Not to mention that they overcharged the shots that they gave her. I also really don't think that all those shots that they give pets is really for their own good. The only shots needed should be the rabies vacc and the one that is suppoed to "promote health" which we know doesn't... having a license in order to own a loyal adorable companion... not a good idea... like at all... my opinion of course...

People are SUPPOSED to have licenses for dogs!! Most people try to get away without doing it, however, if they get caught they get a fine.

As far as cats are concerned...I don't think they are required to have a license. And if they did, I'm sure people would still be irresponsible.

I agree, but lets go one step further, all pet owners will be required to take out an insurance policy for each pet, not so much to cover the life of the pet, but to cover the damage the pet may do to others! too many of these idiots do not want to take responsibility for their animals actions!!!
