The wonderlic test is a test used by the NFL to see how smart a player is. According to Paul Zimmerman the position with the highest wonderlic score is the offensive line. The position with the lowest score was the Halfback. The only person to ever get a perfect on the wonderlic test that played in the NFL was Pat McInally. Pat went to Harvard and was drafted by the Bengals in 1976. So, Pat McInally was the smartest player in NFL history. Many people believed that Ryan Fitzpatrick, also a Harvard graduate, scored a perfect 50 out of 50 on the wonderlic test. However this was wrong, the Wall Street Journal reported he only got a 39 out of 50. Other player with a very high wonderlic test was Kevin Curtis. He scored a 48 out of 50. However it does not matter what you get on the wonderlic test because ther is no test can measure your football IQ.

Edgerrin James?!!??! Are you kidding me he can't even speak proper English, he thinks ebonics is a real language, and he can barely speak that. Never mind that, here's this: Edgerrin James actually thought it would be a good idea to leave the Colts and sign with the Cardinals... that's not smart at all!

I think the smartest player ever is Jerry Richardson, the owner of the Carolina Panthers. He's the only NFL owner who ever played in the NFL. A lot of players have a lot of money now, but back when Richardson played nobody earned money from football, and he still managed to get enough money to not just BUY, but actually START his own football team (remember the Panthers were an expansion team). That's a smart guy.

Most of the great quarterbacks tend to be pretty smart (Terry Bradshaw being an exception).

To those that say all players are smart...have you ever watched post-game interviews? There are guys that have memorized the playbook, but couldn't work the cash register at McDonald's. Then there are geniuses like Chris Henry, who gets arrested four times in a season.

I think its Olin Kreutz, the center for the Chicago Bears, he knows what to do and he's good at it. And everybody has to understand that although some football players act dumb, the majority are not, the media tries to show the ones that draw news.

Hard to say who is the smartest. Football is def. physical but there is a huge mental element in it too--you have to know what you are supposed to do in each play and each situation that can develop in a play, it is a brain game as much as chess.
