What about a Mom and Pop shop that rents P.O. boxes? Are they different than the post office?

If you apply for a (real) post office box (at the Post Office), you must have a valid form of ID, plus, they will check to see if the address you gave is actually where you live. The Post Office provides the highest security for your mail. The others, such as Mail Boxes Etc. are called "delivery agents". Once the postman brings the mail into these places, it is transferred into their hands. If you are waiting for something, and it doesn't arrive, the Post Office will only be able to trace the item to the people who own the receiving agency. If they got it, and you didn't, it's between you and them.
Usually, using an alias will only bring trouble. Be honest, and you'll fare much better!

you have to give the post office your real identification, but your mail can go to an alias name. the post office will most likely have a form for you to fill out to let them know that the mail being recieved in your box is different from your registered name

Yes, you must show ID to get one. However, you can indeed use an alias. You will have to secure the box with your legal name, but can actually "publically" hold the box in another name. Many celebrities do this.
