Please share you honest feelings. I will not get mad at all.
I have lived in Tennessee my whole life and I don't consider myself stupid at all. It really makes me sad when people make fun of us. We may have a slightly different speech dialect than the rest of the US, but that shouldn't label us as stupid. I think the economic business cycle for Tennessee's gross domestic product(GDP) indicates us as the 16th highest in the US. To me we must be somewhat smart to have such a good economy in our state.

To mustardseed. I don't think anything bad about California. I wish I could have the chance to visit your state.

To jessica. Did you read my additional details on my question? I wasn't being mean at all. I'm very sorry if you thought I was being mean.

I'm from the South as well. Tennessee to be exact. I find it somewhat disheartening when people use a southern accent to represent stupidity. The South has developed its own customs, literature, musical styles, and varied cuisines. I would say we are doing pretty good for ourselves. =)
I graduated from the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program with Summa C um Laude honors. I had to put that space between the *C UM* because Yahoo took it offensively....

I have never lived north of the Mason-Dixon line, nor do I have any overtly southern accent. My IQ averages 157 on a bad day. I know the difference between an egg roll and a spring roll, and am well-educated on a wide variety of subjects.
And I am NOT the only Southerner who can lay claim to these and other assets. (Thank you for this excellent question!)

I know I'm not stupid. I was honor student throughout high school, college, and graduate school and now have a career in the mental health field. I grew up in the south and the people are just like every where else. Some people are very smart and some are not. (I actually think people with New England accents sound very odd--it's all in your opinion.)

I have two things to say to that.
1) I was engaged to a Georgian beauty before she was killed in a car accident. I'm Canadian and loved her so much. Her accent was the sexiest thing on this earth and she was smarter than me.
2) There's a reason NASA has mission control in Texas.

When I listen to Jimmuh Carter, he sounds stupid and I'm from Va. My Northern in laws pronounce more words wrong than southerners. No, you're not stupid and who can judge mentality from an accent?

It is nothing but ignorance to judge another person's intelligence based on nothing more than their accent. I have found intelligent people all over the U.S., and, to be honest, quite a few who were, shall we say, lacking in that department. Never have I met a "concentrated" group of people who were ignorant, anywhere here in the U.S.. :)

Speaking as a northerner, I have to say we have our fair share of stupid people up here as well. It's not region specific. And I also want to say I love southerners especially southern men, so sweet and laid-back. And that accent, lord have mercy!

I don't think so. I think that unfortunately stereotypes get out there. The most vocal people get noticed. And in your area, the dumber people are the most vocal. Here in CA, the most vocal people are liberal but not everyone in CA is that liberal either.
I don't think all southerners are stupid, but there are stupid people everywhere!

Any people that are so friendly , and hospitable can not possibly be stupid. Many could learn from them just with that alone. Not to mention so many famous inventions, people, and industry there. We couldn't live with out you!!
