This sounds like a math problem. Let's discuss the answers as though this is funamental algebra.

First, there are 8 bits per byte (b / B). A 10 megabyte file is 80 megabits.

A 6 Mbps connection is 6 Megabits per second. An 80 megabit file takes 80 megabits /6 megabits /sec or 80 / 6 seconds to download provided no other traffic is on the line. This is about 40/3 sec or 13 seconds.

Also remember that the server on the other end that is sending the file is likely to be throttled down to some speed less than yourconneciton speed. This is very common because the server can feed data to several users over various speed connections simultaneously in the throttled down mode. I suspect that you are seeing this throttling influence. Because of this throttling, which is very common, people become disillusioned when files do not download as fast as they calculate - it also indicates that the fastest internet connection may not perform at nameplate speeds in most cases.

At maximum speed, a 6Mbs link will download at about 600k per second, assuming the uploader can upload at these speeds. Usually uploaders have a cap at around 350kbps. In theory it should only take you less than a minute to download that file, but in reality, it's probably gonna take you 2-3 minutes. Also, if it's a DSL 6Mb connection, your speed will be maintained a little better than a Cable 6Mb connection. Cable is more prone to loosing speed at peak internet usage times. Hope some of this helps!

well 6 mbps stands for 6 Megabytes per second.
so theoretically it would take 1 second to download 6 megabytes and ultimately 1.66 seconds to download 10 Megabytes

but your internet is only as fast as your computer. so the internet service details really mean nothing, more important than that is the specifications of your computer, what kind of processor, how much RAM, that sortof stuff that determines your computers speed

More than likely you will not hit the full 6Mbps since you are depended on the upload speeds at the other end. most websites limit bandwidth to 5Mbps for downloading. if you are using a peer to peer program you have to remember that most uploads speeds are no where near the download speeds and Internet congestion plays a factor also. if you want to test your speeds try speakeasy.net that will give you an accurate analysis of your speed.

Who knows? There are far too many variables - traffic of the Internet - how busy the download server is, etc.
'Potentially' your connection download speed is 6MPS - rarely is it ever going to be that if at all.
Besides - are you bragging or complaining?

17 seconds for a 10 MB song and about 15 minuets for a 500 MB video file...that's if you can get the internet to go that fast...

6Mbit/s is slightly less that 1Mbyte/s - so a 10MB song would take about 20 seconds or so (coming from a server that could sustain your max download speed - from a friend or torrent it would be much slower - couple minutes)... and a 500MB movie from a server would probably take half an hour or so... (again torrents would be much slower)
