Hi, I have recently bought and am in the process of fixing up an 84' Porsche 944. My goal is to get it set up for racing in a few years. I'm wondering if I can have it start up using a button start like in real race cars. A lot of times when I watch racing on TV, the drivers flip some switches and then hold down a button to start their cars. I'm wondering why this is used? Also, I would like to have this in my car just for a show effect and to make it like a real race car.
What would I first need to be able to do this? I'd appreciate it if someone could answer these questions.

They don't have a key start on it. They flip a switch for the fuel pump, ignition, and finally hit the start button.

They use a button because they don't have an keyed ignition switch. Without a key, anyone can start your car and drive it off.

For the sake of simplicity and quick change outs in case of damage. Also for lighter weight, since a simple switch doesn't require all that fancy plastic and dash surrounds, it makes the car more nimble and faster.

you can do this, but the llock on your steering wheel has to have a key to unlock ot you need to pull the locking mechanism out of it. then you need to find the power wires that make the car operate when the key is in the run position. and then you need to find the starter wire and put it on that wire to make this work.

Well I'm guessing if it was a key they might accidentally hit the key and knock it out.

I do believe the only reason the race cars have it is because they don't have to worry about
carjacking and people stealing them.......You do!
