I have no clue where some of these people get their info from but female Betta's are far from being dull. I have a few of them. One is a very vibrant red and the other is pastel colors. I haven't seen many that were dull. The only difference between the males and females are..
1. The finnage length. Males will most likely have long fins.
2. If you see them in the pet stores in tiny cups they are males. If they are housed in the same tank they are females
3. Females are more round than Males. They also have a egg spot.
4. Males tend to be more slender looking and have long beards.

Pet stores sell mostly male bettas. Most males (except the very unusual deltas that are mentioned in the previous answer) have the long flowing tails and brighter colors. Females can be colorful as well (mine is kind of a vanilla color with bright red fins, with blue between the rays), but their fins won't be so long.

Here's a pic of a female that looks a lot like mine (but mine is brighter). http://z.about.com/d/freshaquarium/1/0/R/S/betta04G.jpg

Males tend to be a lot more bigger and their fins are very large and beautiful. Females (they also have a white dot under them) are usually plain and small. This is not always true, though. I've had very vibrant females and their fins were not that small. One of my male bettas is rather dull and his fins aren't very big. So just goes to show you that it's not always the case. Also, you'll know a male when you see one if he puffs out his gills like fans.

The colorful beta fishes are the ones who are male. In most pet stores they only sell male beta fish

look under the fish, inbetween the ventircles will be a white dot or egg tube on females.

please dont listen to folks who i know will say, males have long fins and females have short fins. As this isnt always true. it just shows their inexperience.

As males are naturally short finned (to the post below me, they are not deltas they are called plakats) and some of my halfmoon females have more finnage than some petstore males.

Edit: its BETTA not BETA.

Edit 2: deltas are not short fins, plakats are. Deltas are long fin bettas that are special as they have straight tail rays, where veils will have curved tails

Males are very colorful and have long, flowing fins. Females have short, little fins with fairly drab colors. At any good pet store, the males are labeled separately from females.

Directed towards Bettachris: Most pet stores only sell the males that have long fins, they see no reason to sell a short finned male... their mistake.

this is my favorite question to answer.a girl, the easiest way to figure out if it is one is that she has short fins.but sometimes its tricky because i learned that some female may be premature or just didnt adjust right,or made you could say.so every female no matter if it has long flowy fins or short ones they always have a little white spot on the bottom of them, where there babies come from. h. i. h.!
