When the Revolution started, not everyone wanted to break away. Those that didn't, moved to Canada. So a majority that lived in Canada loved the monarchy and refused to join America.

Hey
Yea so why didn't Americans conquer Canada? Well they tried to during the revolution. A certain AMerican commander named Benedict Arnold led a force from Northern New York to conquer Quebec.
It was a hard trek through Indian country, swamps, bush and mosquito hordes. Not to mention Indian sharpshooters and the rampant malaria.
ANyways by the time they got there it was dead Winter. Really really cold. They attacked Quebec but were caught by a fierce Canadian ruse and beaten down.
So America did try. Twice in fact. Never worked cus of the Niagara bottleneck and the fierce woodland seperating Canada and the US

We tried and failed. Benedict Arnold led an attack on Montreal which was repelled. (along with two other future traitors, Col. Aaron Burr and Lt. James Wilkinson, what a bunch!) The native Candian population was either passivist or pro-British so that made conquring the region more difficult. We tried to take Canada again in the War of 1812, but all of our attempts failed. look up the Battle of Chrysler's Farm, a total embarrassment for us.
and btw, Canada never burned the White House down, those were British troops.

They had to take Quebec and they couldn't do it. They lost the Battle of Quebec when they tried to take the citadel of Quebec City. The attack happened on December 31, 1775. A spy in the Continental camp told the British Commander that an attack was going to happen, so the British were ready for them.

The french were our allies in the war of Independence (no, not allot of help, but enough). They also had interests in Canada, as did Brittan. So (and I could be wrong here) had we tried to capture Canada in the war, we would have alienated our allies and possibly spread the war to Europe. Plus, I don't think we wanted Canada, we just wanted freedom.

Because empire building wasn't part of the plan, according to the Founding Fathers. They also did not want to butt heads with the British again, nor with the French.
