I've always wanted to join the army or the airforce, however my friend tells me over and over that she wont let me go. She has NOTHING against those two things, and strongly supports them and all they do for our country. She just said that she doesnt want to loose me. We were talking today about how if I did go that I might miss things like her wedding or important things in her childrens lives. I dont blame her for this I guess, I just dont understand why she's doing it. Does she really care about me that much that she wants/needs me around her or does she just not want me to pursue my dream?

Nobody wants to think about losing someone close to them. Going into the military means possibly giving your life for your country. Even if you aren't on the battle front, you're not going to be around for long periods of time. In a way it's selfish of her to not allow your dreams, but she obviously cares about you and would miss you a lot if you weren't around. If that's what you really want to do though, you have to pursue it. You can write letters and keep in touch. You'll be able to visit if you aren't stationed too far away.

my question is when is she getting married? if you guy were just talking about in the future, i don't see how it would be a problem for you to pursue your dreams now. did you throw in a scenario of you getting married and a possibility of moving away? what about moving away for college? will she stop you from these as well?
i've had to leave family and friends and yes it was hard, but i'm glad i did because of all i've seen and experienced. i've gone home for weddings , graduations and birthdays so i have lost touch with those i care for. you just have to plan in advance. yep, i'm still able to see family and friend except for right now because i'm in iraq. i get to go home within a month or 2 and plan on taking 2 - 3 weeks vacation. guess were i'm going home to visit family and friends.

Don't know what country you are from but as a general rule, as soon as you don a military uniform people from other countries want to kill you....I guess she might be concerned about this which is nice of a friend BUT if it is really your dream (as misguided as it might be - personal opinion) she should support you... go sign up but to make her feel better put her name down as the recipient of your body bag when you are KIA.

Some people want to suck up the energy in other people's lives. The are the nearest things to real vampires in real life.

It sounds like your friend is very concerned for your safety. I think that you might want to sit down with your friend again and discuss with her the same kinds of things that you've mentioned here. Then listen to her concerns, and explain to her why it's so important to you. Maybe the two of you will understand each other that much better.
