Everyone above is right on about the bubble nest. I just wanted to correct any misconceptions about bubble nests in bowls. They WILL make them in a bowl, even without a heater and the bowl kept at room temp. You'll probably also want to start treating your tap water with a water conditioner.

the bubbles are simpily a nest. the male beta makes a nest or a bunch of bubbles at the top of his bowl. then the female will come and lay her eggs in this nest and it will provide protection for the eggs. if u wanted to have beta babies then i would get a female beta and put her in the males tank( alho ull wana remove the male and possibly the female once the babies come) and i hear bettas are easy to breed. but if u dont want babies then just leave the bubbles alone untill u change his bowl.

Bettas have both gills and lungs to breath. When they go to the surface of the water to breath atmospheric air, they create small, transparent bubbles. That just means it is breathing (which is a good thing).

Bettas will not make bubble nests in small bowls, they need a heater to even think about mating.

Your fish is most def. a male. When males are ready to mate, they make little "bubble nets" for the eggs he and his mate produce. If you buy a female betta, you'll be getting little betta babies! But you'll have to take out the female once she has already laid the eggs.

If you just filled the bowl with tap water, most sinks have an aerator on it to mix air with the water. These bubbles stick to the sides of the bowl and everything in it, they are harmless and will slowly disappear. If you use tap water make sure to use a water conditioner to remove the chlorine and other heavy metals in it.

You don't need to do anything with your water! If the water was harming your betta, it would be dead already...
