I have a 1998 Ford Contour, V6, 92000 miles. Usually, my car shifts gears pretty well and I just feel it a little bit like you do on most cars. But, whenever I accelerate really quickly (like pulling out very fast from a stop sign) the transmission shifts really hard and the car sort of jerks as it shifts. After that initial jerk, the car runs fine and acts normal. What does this mean?

It means your automatic shifting is going out. The engine rpm builds up pressure in the hydraulic fluid which operates shuttle valves to overcome spring tension. Your springs will get weakened and then you'll be stuck somewhere because the transmission won't shift.

If it is only when you accelerate hard, don't accelerate hard or you will start to burn your transmission fluid and it will shift harder more often. If it does not shift hard any other time, then you should be ok for now. Ford usually recommends you get a transmission flush every 50,000 miles.

your car is simply getting older. your transmission isn't going to go out anytime soon. as long as you don't drive it like a drag racer. check your transmission fluid. if it isn't a red color you should have it changed. this will cost you about $50, but will help your transmission last longer.
