I have an old 96 Ibm that was upgraded to a 98 and also had a a memory upgrade done in 2003, and also has a new hard drive from the prevouse owner. Its a spare. It runs great .We never use it because we have two brand new computers.I wanted to get my mom started on the internet but the computer is only set up for dial up.what would I need to buy or do to get it set up for high speed?I just want her to learn so she is not afraid to go out and get a computer later. I dont want to spend to much though.

you have to remember some people are afraid of computers they think they are going to break them.If you give them something cheap to play with than they will take the luanch and go for the reall thing. My mom can see how fast high speed on a good system runs .Can I hook it up through a USB?

if the computer doesn't have an Ethernet port built in (probably not) you'll need to find out if a) the computer has a PCI slot available to use and b) buy an ethernet card for it...

the other thing you really need to consider it, will this computer honestly run the internet? or will it be so insanely slow that it will drive your mom insane waiting on it (high speed internet won't make the COMPUTER any faster)? that computer is REALLY old, and even with the very limited upgrades you could have done to it, I seriously doubt you'd really want to do any with it, other than buy a classified and list it at $25

network your computer to the IBM. so that your mom can get on the net through your system... you would need to buy an Ethernet card (10/100) and a cross over cable.

you don't say what your runnning on your computer 98 or XP/Vista so I can not explain how you can set it up.

so the best thing I can tell you to do is do a web search on ... networking two computers, you will get a list of help websites...

you could also go to IBM's support web site and ask there, join, the IBM user forums and ask IBM users.

You might want to try tiger direct. They have "high speed" dial-up modems like this one:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1220925&CatId=157

and they also have externel cable modems like this one:

I'm not sure quite what your looking for but I hope this helps. Also I've found out that older people don't like the internet ( my mom is a prime example ). I wish you good luck!
