Well I went downstairs just a few minutes ago and was greeted with an awful smell.. the smell of burnt rubber. I have no idea what it is, and I'm worried that it might be something serious.
Any idea what it could be, and can it be dangerous?

Could it be the belt of some appliance/machinery like your washing machine or the belt between the motor and blower of an air handling system? These belts will stink of burnt rubber when overloaded or one of the pulleys jams and the belt skids across it. Also the belts that run the brushes on vacuum cleaners will do this if something big gets sucked in that jams the brush. (Just a thought).

I just now noticed one of the others mentioned this already (I guess brilliant minds do think alike)

If you go and check some of the questions Femme has asked, you will see that she isn't the sharpest crayon in the box. Who in the world would not know where to go to have a key copy made?

She ought to clean up her own back yard before criticizing someone else's question.

These other answers state the obvious...if it was electrical you would have found it by now...If you have any floor drains in the basement the smell may have emitted from there...Were any belt driven appliances in use? (washer, dryer, furnace blower, etc.) I would check that out. I would bet someone was burning something nasty and the wind blew it towards your house.
