For me, it's the Lord of the Rings. Not the movies--as dear as they are to me, the book are definitely the better.
Tolkien's works contain a depth to them that you can't find in many fantasy fiction books today. They simply don't have Tolkien's touch when it comes to creating a world and that people yearn for. The books are not petty, concerned with only one particular person, his life, his abilities, his fate etc, but with an entire world's fate as they battle an great evil for the fate of all.
LOTR is a story a person can identify with easily in their lives, from temptation of the Ring to the choices that Frodo must make.
Harry Potter--it serves as an amusement--perhaps someone's infatuation with it might last several years, but The Lord of the Rings will last even longer--I know of many who cherished the books from childhood to adulthood.
That's my two cents.

easy. Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter is nice, but it's just fluff compared to Lord of the Rings.

Harry Potter. Merely because I can barely get through the first 60 or so pages of LOTR. It's a tough read, too dry and too much detail. Not to say JRR Tolkien wasn't a master concerning his work, just that I don't particularly like it, The Hobbit was better.
I enjoy JK Rowling's books, even the other two done that surround the series. (Quiddtich through the ages and Magical beasts and where to find them, I think that's the second one, if not it's something similar). HP is classified as a children's book, but it captivates all levels of readers. There are new surprises every time you read it because of the new understandings that just click. I just enjoy HP more than LOTR, by far, even though both are great.

Not even close. As good as Harry Potter is, LotR is an epic that has spanned many decades, and would be my pick.

JRRT's work... It's far deeper, no matter the thick language used (thick as in I almost couldn't chew it down...)
I also like HP but it's just a fantasy story (though a very good one). Middle Earth stories are a completely different universe, together with their miths and legends... it's more complete I'd say... or thorough
