There is a mass confusion in the state between religion and science.

The most pivotal example I can think of is stem cell research. This is a science that globally most nations have been looking at as the cutting edge of medical treatment, however in America it is taboo. The is predominantly due to the gross quality of misinformation perpetuated by a very vocal right wing.

Stem cells do not come from aborted fetus, they can be found in placental blood, amniotic fluid and "left over" embryos from IVF treatment.

America is ripe with lobbyists representing some of the largest corporations in the nation. They are unofficially the legislators as they are responsible for a large portion of the economy as well as a large portion of government funding. They represent pharmaceuticals, oil and tobacco. Their interests will often supersede those of the average Joe as they can afford to have their opinions heard, regardless if they correspond to accepted theory.

Ignorance... Th US is still under the influence of the Southeastern United States Hillbilly Taliban and the Coalition of Rapture Rights. It should become evident, (and is), that the whiz-bang bible thumpers are of the same genre as the kool-aid koran kooks. Two groups fighting for the top dog position are exactly like the the Democrats and Republicans in conflict when both represent the same corrupt and power strategy to dominate the same agenda. Stem cell research might find some cures and the established drug companies would be out a dollar.

Taking a science class makes me no more a scientist than watching TV makes me a TV (directed at the 1st responder).

Science requires patience, understanding and a suspension of what you already know. Americans have a 'microwave' mentality-whatever the dilemma, it has to be solved in an instant. Just like their sitcoms and their cop dramas that solve every crime in 60 minutes.

But don't blame Americans. We have been miseducated about just about everything. From the origin of humankind to the origin of AIDS, we're kept in the dark so that the 'evil-doers' can have their way with us.

Plenty of us believe in science, as illustrated by so many of our great inventions. It's only a vocal minority that distrusts science as surely as the people who excommunicated Galileo did, and it's coming from the same source. To some people, faith is at complete odds with science. If they're willing to believe the either/or, they will come down on the side of faith (as if all scientists are atheists or something). That leads to the denial of things like greenhouse gasses, evolution, etc.

It's not the USA - it's idiots who shout loudly that claim to represent Americans - typically religious idiots or political zealots

Americans by and large stand strong with the teachings of science

just pay no attention to the barking idiots that say otherwise - they in no way represent the vast majority of Americans

as they say - "the empty tin can makes the loudest noise"

Most people I know are quite interested in science. Would you like to discuss molecular cell biology in coffee shops or what? How about quantum physics?

I think that it's at least in part due to the influence of religious fundamentalists. After all, these are the people who either don't want Darwin's theory taught in public schools or else they want it taught alongside the Intelligent Design theory (Creationism cloaked in scientific terminology). Not only that, but many of them either choose not to believe that global warming is real, since doing something about it would be inconvenient, or else they don't care, because they believe that Armageddon is near at hand, so to them it's pointless to try to save the planet.

Many americans are stubborn idealogues, who blindly follow some form of faith that objects to science. Or stubborn morons who follow idealogues. What gets me is when they self describe as sheep. The only thing that could be better than that is if they self described as lemmings.

If so many Americans do not believe in science,..

Why does the U.S. take out more scientific and engineering patents than any other country?
