As a up and coming rap artist see (Big 5 and Da camp's myspace page) I do indeed think that it is a form of self-expression, and art. But I also think that nowadays there are fewer rap artist's that have talent. Back in the day you needed talent. Now everybody and there cousin has a rap cd. Dont get me wrong there are still artists out there that have talent, but when a song with no lyrical quality like "This is why I'm hot" makes it then that is proof that just having enough money can get you out there. But it takes talent to stay out there and continue to be popular.
PS I provide proof to my example used above. The chorus goes and I quote..."I'm hot cause I'm fly you not cause you aint" That sounds like my 5 yr old neice wrote that. Its like me asking the driver of a car ME: "Hey why are you driving?" and him saying: "I'm driving cause I'm driving" How stupid can it get. Or "Chicken Noodle Soup, Chicken Chicken Noodle Soup." Like I said when rap first came out if you didn't have talent you didn't make it. You wanna hear guys with talent check out these guys:
Lecrae, Flame, Da Ambassador, Mr. Real, Manafest, Big 5 and Da Camp, Tedashi, Trip Lee, T-Bone, Ill Harmonics, Gospel Gangtas, Prime Minister, Kirk Franklin, KJ-52, Toby Mac, Grits, etc etc etc
PSS: The guy above me is right on look at Diddy has he ever made a beat that was original or has he always stolen uh I mean "sampled" from other groups such as the Police etc. Musically I would bet that less than 20 % of rappers out there can read music, sing, or play an instrument, let alone write anything with lyrical value. Most rap today is throw away garbage.
You speak a whole lot but you don't say nothin'
Frontin' like you hard but you soft like a muffin
Guys with talent come along and knock out your stuffin'
cause we tired of all you fakers talkin smack and bluffin'

It is a valid form of self-expression for the simple reason that people express themselves through rap. I haven't read much rap that I would consider good poetry--it is often clever. Sometimes it might be poetic in a sense, but usually it travels down the same tired cliched roads that bad poetry does.

Beating your head against a wall is a valid form of self expression. So is rap. Doesn't mean everybody want to see you do it though.
It is one of a million valid ways to express emotions just as country music, classical music, art, dance and a million other things are.

I am still trying to get my head around the phrase "valid form of self-expression." I thought self-expression just "is." It's neither valid nor invalid. It is what it is, self-expression. Whether we want to deign to call it art or validate it in some other way by our own personal standards is a whole separate issue.

I feel that, while yes it is a valid form of self-expression, most rappers have debased it into a very sophomoric, juvenile form. It's beat structure and lack of tonal variation show it to be a very childish (by that I mean unsophisticated) way of trying to create music. Most rap, but not all, is very lacking in any real musical quality, being more a form of beat poetry than anything else.

This is a stupid, insulting question. I mean, this is a really stupid question. Rap has changed the face of this world. Just think of everything that has been touched, changed, affected by the rap culture. It has spawned a whole generation. Why wouldn't it be a valid form of self-expression? Is it not poetry to music? This is a dumb question.

I have talked to enough people who seriously like it that I credit it with being a valid form of self expression. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean it isn't ...art.

Um, how can any form of self expression be "not valid"? It's self expression. Self expression can be whatever the self chooses to express.

Darling, as with all form of paintings, that that's new and frustrating is ordinarily feared. And, as with all form of paintings, it particularly is commercialized into some thing basically vaguely remiscent of its unique style. happens each and all the time - in all generes and media. What concerns me is that what passes for "Rap" is truthfully some massive mogule's theory of what's commercially achievable. And those mogules are not inevitably cigar-smoking fat previous white exuctives - they're those "gangstahs" who shoot one yet another in nightclubs etc. they at the instant are not fascinated interior the paintings style - that's as valid as the different paintings - yet basically drawn to how lots money they make off of the uneducated, unsuspecting public. regrettably a lot of human beings swallow this C-Rap by using fact the genuine stuff - whilst it particularly is somebody else's theory of what followers will purchase. by way of ways, the main suitable Rap I"ve ever heard grow to be in Bakersfield CA - by way of some highway freestylists on a highway nook. They have been "reducing heads" (an previous jazz term) seeing who might desire to freestyle the main suitable. It grow to be large. One did a love music. the different made a social fact approximately unemployment. i grow to be inspired and grew to grow to be prepared on good rap.
