Hello, I know this is a hard question to understand because I don't know how to really present it. So pleae bare with me.

I curious in learning more about mechanics but not nessarly in the field of auto mechanics. But more around the lines of using compents like gears, cranks, shafts, etc to build things that can function once all the peices are put in place.

I don't know what this would be called and perhaps someone else may know? I know it's mechanics but is there a more scientific name to it?

Thanks.

I'm hoping someone in the physic section of yahoo answers could give me some names or terms to use for a search. Thanks.

As others have indicated, this is a subfield of mechanical engineering. Courses in this area are usually called "Machine design." I suspect a textbook from an engineering technology program (two-year degree) might not be too far over your head. Download the source for a textbook and course description.

Mechanics is another field entirely, very theoretical and very mathematical.

Baring with you would involve removing clothing, which is probably not what you're asking...

You're asking about the field of Mechanical Engineering. There are many books available on this topic. Many of them cover how to design and manufacture gear systems.

Check your library for a book on the machine designs of Franz Reuleaux. He was the inventor of all kinds of nifty reciprocating machines. Almost all of them involve gears, linkages, belts, chains, or bearings, and they all have some unique function, like turning steady motion at one end into back-and-forth motion on the other end.

I think this is mechanical engineering, you study gears, hydraulics, pneumatics, damping and how these components make up a functioning unit.

Physics and Maths studies are a definate for this area of science!
