There's very little in Bram Stoker's novel about Count Dracula's life, or how he became a vampire. It's left largely a mystery, with the following passage (spoken by Dr. Van Helsing) being the only time anyone directly discusses the issue:
"I have asked my friend Arminius, of Buda-Pesth University, to make his record; and, from all the means that are, he tell me of what he has been. He must, indeed, have been that Voivode Dracula who won his name against the Turk, over the great river on the very frontier of Turkey-land. If it be so, then was he no common man; for in that time, and for centuries after, he was spoken of as the cleverest and the most cunning, as well as the bravest of the sons of the ‘land beyond the forest’ … The Draculas were, says Arminius, a great and noble race, though now and again were scions who were held by their coevals to have had dealings with the Evil One. They learned his secrets in the Scholomance, amongst the mountains over Lake Hermanstadt, where the devil claims the tenth scholar as his due. In the records are such words as ‘stregoica’ – witch, ‘ordog,’ and ‘pokol’ – Satan and hell; and in one manuscript this very Dracula is spoken of as ‘wampyr,’ which we all understand too well."
That's all Stoker reveals about Dracula's life before he became a vampire -- he was a clever and brave nobleman who fought against the Turks. This part was inspired by the historic Vlad the Impaler. This also appears to be the full extent of what Stoker knew about Vlad the Impaler. He was apparently unaware of Vlad's reputation for cruelty, and didn't even know that he was called "Vlad the Impaler".
Stoker's notes for "Dracula" survive today, and it seems he just thought Vlad's nickname "Dracula" (which can be translated as "Son of the Devil") was a cool name for a villain. It's not clear that he meant his fictional character to be the same person as the historic figure. So the life of Vlad the Impaler doesn't tell us much about what the fictional Count Dracula was like in life. See the website linked below for more info on the Dracula/Vlad the Impaler issue (Dr. Elizabeth Miller is probably the world's biggest expert on "Dracula" as a literary work).
According to the novel, Count Dracula must have been involved with black magic or the occult. The origin of vampirism in the novel seems to be a pact with Satan. (Presumably something like "I give you my soul in exchange for power and immortality!") Maybe one of Dracula's ancestors first made the deal with the Devil and then turned other members of the family into vampires. But since no older vampires are mentioned, it may be that Dracula himself is the original vampire.
As for killing someone who isn't dead, Van Helsing points out in the book that Dracula is NOT dead. He's "undead", an unnatural state that is neither living nor dead. The undead body can be killed, with some difficulty, granting the vampire true death.

If you liked queen of the damned, then i would most definately suggest watching interview with a vampire. It is quite the movie, and book. Bram Stokers Dracula is good as well. John Carpenters Vampires is also very good, it stars James Woods, and Daniel Baldwin. All of these are good. Hope that helped.

Legend says that Dracula was the first vampire, who made a deal with Satan, for immortality. Thus Satan made him the first vampire.

some say that he made a deal with Satan. his life before is vampirical existence, some say, was a life of opulence and cannibalism.
If a vampire is already dead, how is it they say you can kill a dead person, again? - it's not exactly "killing" it per se... it's more of putting an end to how they will harm "us".

He prayed to the mighty vampire Gods of Transylvania and they granted him vampirism for eternity, but he had to die first, so he bit himself in the neck and killed himself and became a vampire. The End. And if you don't believe my lie is true, ask the deaf man, he heard about it too.
