Hands down a grizz. For one they are much larger and far more aggressive. Black bears tend to be the type of animal that will shy away from humans as much as possible. That is not to say that they do not or cannot attack, it is just far more rare than a grizz attack. Even then, if you were to run into them and they were to charge... a black is far simpler to scare away.

All bears due to their size and being territorial are dangerous.

However, I have had a direct encounter with a Black Bear. I was walking around the side of my house and their he was, about 10 ft from me. We both saw each other at the same time, and he went south and I went north. He looked more scared of me than I was of him. However, that confrontation could have went differently if that would have been a female with cubs. That is the biggest danger with Black Bears, don't get in between a mother an her cubs. I have also seen many other Black Bears, although not so close up, and they just run off. I have never heard of an aggressive Black Bear where I live, in upstate NY.

Grizzlies, on the other hand, are so much larger, and will attack if startled. They will tend to avoid us whenever possible, but if you are hiking and walk up to one unannounced, chances are you are going to be in trouble. When I was hiking in Grizzly country, I always kept a couple of pans hanging on my pack, which would clang together and announce my presence. I never even saw a Grizzly. btw, this was in Wyoming and Montana.

The most aggressive bear, that will attack, well, just because, is the Polar Bear.

Black Bear Dangerous

If you are in a forest then the Black will be the more dangerous. An adult Grizzly will be too heavy to scale all but the most sturdy of trees. A Black will have no trouble climbing after you into a tree.

Also if you encounter a bear in a place that is heavily used by recreating humans you are going to be in much more danger than if you ran into an unhabituated animal deep in the wildereness. I guess we can thank our National Parks, the Department of the Interior and the logging industry for all that they have done in making our backroads more dangerous for hikers.

American black bears have a wider range in continental America, are more numerous, and as was correctly stated account for more total death in the United States than any other bear. A mother grizzly with cubs is however one of the most dangerous animals on the planet along with the crocodile (in particular the saltwater crocodile) and the great white shark. Your strategy with brown bears and black bears is opposite. With a brown bear you cover your face and head, drop to the ground, and don't move. You do this with a black bear you are dead meat. The only way to deal with a black bear is to fight. You peg it in the nose with all your might with a rock, not just a slap to make it angry, but a devastating blow that knocks it senseless. There is no other way to defend yourself with a black bear. Do that to a grizzly and you are dead too.

Most dangerous bears (in terms of size and aggression) are :

1. Polar
2. Kodiak
3. Grizzly
4. Black

Bears are most aggressive when their cubs are with them, or they're sick. If they're just foraging for food, you stand a better chance of surviving, depending on your own body movements.

More people die from black bears than any other but that's only because there are more of them and don't mind living outside city limits. If I had a choice, I'd gladly meet up with a black bear than one of the others :-)

Both. People encounter black bears more, but a grizzly bear is bigger and stronger. If you include all bears, the polar bear is the most dangerous. They're the biggest, can swim, and they are carnivores.

If you stumble across a bear in the wilderness a grizzly is more dangerous, they are more likely to stand their ground or attack. This said grizzly bears are almost unknown to actually hunt humans. Black bears have actually have (albeit rarely) been known to stalk and kill people in the wilderness. As always try not to be alone in woods that are known to have bears and always observe bear safety.

Ursus Horribles is the name for the Grizzly Bear and it deserves the name, as it is the most unpredictable of all bears. Is believed to be related to the Polar Bear too. I've done research papers for college classes and looked up info.

My vote goes for black bears. they may be smaller than brown bears, but they are still bigger and stronger than you are and they are more "moody". A brown bear shows his mood on his paw, if hes angry, you know it, but a black is more likely to walk away like nothing is wrong then change its mind and become angry.
By the way, a kodiak bear a grizzley and a brown bear are all the same type of bear.
