Incredibly, a few other posters here have said that they think that the 2008 presidential elections should be put on hold until the war ends! Is that un-American, or what!

These are Bush's own words:

"A dictatorship is fine... as long as I am the dictator."

A little historical perspective...

After WW-II, at the Nuremberg Trials for War Crimes & Crimes Against Humanity, Hermann Goering, Hitler's Reich Marshall and his right hand man said:

"Naturally the common people don't want war. But after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and for exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country."

Sound familiar?

Tell me again how Bush and his supporters are "Conservative." They seem pretty radical to me.

Every US President has had to stand for Re-Election, war or not. And, since the enactment of the 24th Ammendment, lame ducks have left war or not. Lincoln was absolutely certain that he would lose his primary in 1864--the elections were held anyway. The Republic has survived.

But, I can see Bush's point. He's making the troops serve extended tours in Iraq--why should he be excluded?

After all, I live in Chicago. A lot of people never stopped voting for Daley the First after they died. So naturally a lot of people supported the idea that he shouldn't have to give up being Mayor just because HE died.

Yes, the usual suspects here would love to establish a dictatorship and put all the "lieberals" "libtards" "communists"
"Traitors" in jail or worse. They just can't handle freedom, especially the freedom of people with different views on politics and morality. It really isn't incredible, there will always be a certain percentage of the population willing to submit themselves to an authoritarian regime in exchange for perceived safety or promises of security, etc.

Another question recently showed how many would love to anonymously turn their neighbors in to authorities for not being patriotic enough.

Some americans believe that decisions of running a country and a government are best made by certain people in the know....and that the idea of representative government is a fallacy since the great majority of citizens are too ignorant of whats really good for the country and how important business and wealth and how to create wealth really is.

Apparently, at least 30% of the population.

The ones that support Bush ignoring laws at will, and think Congress should just shut up and do as they're told -- as if Congress weren't the first branch of government created. (Article I -- Congress. Article II -- Executive)

And yes, it is the most un-American thing I've ever heard. Which makes the fact that it is so widespread so dangerous.

I don't think we could survive a dictatorship. We'd have all out civil war here.

It's a smoke screen by the Democrats. Yes, the Democrats would love to be our dictators. Why do you think they want to let all the illegals into the country. It would mean 20 million votes for the Democrats and would end the two party system. Peace
