planet placements mean alot abt a person. whatever house a planet falls in, it means that that area of life, the 1 governed by the house, is the area of life u will express that plnt's energy. whatevr sign a planet falls in means that u will act like that sign in the area of life governed by the planet. so, jupiter rules karma, luck, expansion. its energies r constructive. this planet allows us 2 expand & grow beyond ourselves. it also indicates travel & foreign affairs. jupiter rules the "higher" mind, or our spiritual & intellectual interests in a profound sense. so, jupiter in aries may mean u r aggresive in ur beliefs, as if evrything is personal. u expand through grabbing the oppurtunity the moment it arrives. jupiter in the 1st house can mean that u expand through ur personality (the 1st house is ur personality, its the house associated w/ our behavior towards others, esp. others we dont no well). u may travel at the spur of the moment, just out of haste. u may over-indulge, & weight gain can b a problem 4 u.

these r the houses & a short overview of their meanings:
1st house---personality, what we show the outside world
2nd house---finances, how we view money (if we save or splurge, donate or penny-pinch, etc.)
3rd house---communications & siblings, how we communicate & think (r we slow talkers, quick-witted,etc.); also an emphasis on siblings, our relationships w/ them
4th house---family, esp. the mother, & how we act at home, how our family is viewed by society. many times, the first-born has its mother in the 4th house in sum way, either by 1 of the mothers signs, or 1 of the plnts ruling 1 of her signs.
5th house---pleasures, how we indulge & also how creative we r. also, there's an emphasis on children, how we view them
6th house---work & health, what kind of employee we r, how much we like 2 work, if we work often, etc. also, the sign ruling the 6th can indicate areas of health trouble
7th house---relationships, what kind of ppl we r attracted 2, our relationships w/ them
8th house---sex,death, & taxes, a house clouded in mystery. this shows how we view death, how sexually open or frustrated we r, etc.
9th house---higher mind, how we act on a spiritual level. also can affect our intelligence overall.
10th house---career & authoritive figure, what kind(s) of career(s) we want 2 have & do have. theres an emphasis on the father, or at least the disciplinary parent.
11th house---friends,groups; how we associate w/ friends. also what kinds of ppl we want & may have as frnds
12th house---personal unconscious, things abt ourselves that we dont want others 2 c or no abt. planets here can indicate grt challenges throughout life.

Well Jupiter in the first house is like Jupiter in Aries, only instead here Jupiter rules over the affairs of that house. Thus it would be that the person with this planet in the first house would have Jovian features and personality. While the person with this planet in Aries would instead just have the traits of Jupiter in Aries.

The general view is that the sign indicates "how" a planet's energy is expressed and the house indicates "where" the energy is expressed (in other words, in which area of life).

Using your example, say for instance that Person A has Jupiter in Aries in the 10th house and Person B has Jupiter in Capricorn in the 1st house. I would say that Jupiter is far more likely to affect the general public image of Person B (which would be one of warmth and optimism), while Person A is most likely to pursue a Jupiter related career and to experience good fortune in this area.

Nevertheless, I find that people with Jupiter in Capricorn also experience good fortune in Capricorn related matters such as career and that people with Jupiter in Aries also express a sense of warmth and optimism.

Consequently, I personally do not think that the distinction between a planet's sign and house placement is entirely clear cut. I find evidence for this when observing how people behave in relation to their sun sign and house placement. I find that people express the personality traits of both their sun sign and house and that they are also active in areas of life ruled by both sign and house.

In Aries, he acquires the nature of Aries; while in 1st house, he retains his own nature, which he then brings into that house.
For instance, in Aries, Jupiter, which is about principles and beliefs, philosophy etc, can mean that a person is very passionate in their beliefs ( fiery aries).
In the 1st house, it means that their personality ( 1st house), attracts "philosophy" (philosophers or doctors, or lawyers, etc).
Also, there's Jupiter in conjunction to Mars ( ruler of Aries) which is somewhat similar, but could mean a philosophy or philosopher (Jupiter), who is facing (conjuntion = a face to face), with an initiative (mars) or an agressive person or an industrious and productive person of some kind.

The planet is the energy.
The sign is how that energy is expressed
The house is what area of life the energy is expressed in.

Simply put, the second part of your question refers to the 'natural wheel' when you ask about signs and houses.

Aries is the natural ruler of the 1st house. If a planet which would rule or be dignified in Aries lands in the 1st house, it would likewise be stronger than normal in influence. It is called being "accidently dignified' when it lands in the house that it rules.

I think the effects would be similar but planets in houses are more powerful. If you had midheaven in cancer and neptune conjuncting the midheaven from the 10th house the neptune would be more important. If you had no planets in the 10th house conjunct midheaven then the sign on the cusp would be of greater importance

All planets have certain meanings and can take on different aspects when in different houses and planets.

There are 12 houses in astrology each one representing different aspects of life:
1st house of self, 2nd house of money and possessions, 3rd house of communication, 4th house of beginnings and home life, 5th house of pleasure creativity and sex, 6th house of service and health, 7th house of partnership and marriage, 8th death and regeneration, 9th mental exploration and long distance travel, 10th career and public standing, 11th friends and hopes and wishes and 12th secrets, sorrows ad self undoing.
