I will be moving into an apartment that has no air conditioning. We may still have a few heat waves blow through, so I'm wondering how I might keep my fish tank under 78F if it gets too warm outside.

Thank you in advance. ^_^

You can't make a substantial difference without a chiller, sorry.

You can remove the hood a position floor fan to blow across the tank in the hottest part of the day to aid with evaporative cooling. This only helps some, though.

Generally, while it's not ideal to go much above 82 degrees for most species, they should be able to withstand higher temps (say up to maybe 90-92 degrees) for short periods ok. The trick is to make sure the high water temp is the only problem you are dealing with. This means cut back on the food while the temp is high and make sure the water quality is perfect. Also, if you haven't already, add an airstone to the tank for extra oxygenation. The biggest problem with high water temps is the dissolved oxygen content goes down. Just use a bit of common sense and they should be fine.

First, how big is your tank? If you have a heater and a thermometer, turn off the heater. Watch your temp. If it gets too high add some ice cubes OR freeze some water in small bottles and add them to the tank. If you have 55 gallons, add two or three. Smaller tanks need less. Watch your temp. You need to keep a close eye on tings for awhile until you can figure out how many times a day you need to do it.

Keep your tank/tanks away from windows and close all the blinds in the room where they are. Keep a fan on for circulation.

I wouldn't advise you to put ice cubes, because when it melts the toxic chemicals can kill your fish. Also small ice pointy ice can choke fich. If you try to put it in a ziploc bag and float it in the water, the sudden temp change can harm your fish.

I would suggest placing it in the coolest part of the room. Use a fan to blow above the water. Other than that they should be fine. Goldfish can tolerate a wide variety of temperartures. However if it reaches into the 90's and 100's then taht's when I would really start to worr

Very simple
I guess you have a heater, so just check the temperature, and if it is to high turn the knob to a lower temperature, check the temp after 24 hours, if it is still to high repeat it

You can repeat that as often as you have to until the temperature is where you want it to be
But don't forget that it takes 24 hours for the water temperature to regulate

AND STAY AWAY FROM ICECUBES, VERY DANGEROUS FOR YOUR FISH

Hope that helps
Good luck

you dont ever put ice cube in your tank when they melt all the chemicals in the water go into your tank and this could kill your fish.
Blow a fan across the top of the water or freeze water in a zip lock bag or in a bottle.

Put ice-cubes in the tank.

if they are tropical the heat might not bother them as long as it dose not get 95 or 100 you should be ok.
